Brief 1 - POV

The first brief I was given was focused on the idea of POV (point of view) from a specific object or person; in this instance, the object was a vase of flowers. I decided to collaborate with my colleague David Grimason for this piece as I believed having two minds tackle this idea together would prove much more effective in order to create a more effective and emotional piece. I laid down the chord progression on a Casio keyboard with a piano preset in order to convey a very sombre tone to complement David’s very warm, Tom Waits-esque voice. We later presented this to our colleagues, and I let David develop this into his own track.
Admittedly, I found this to be the most restrictive method of songwriting, not due to the method itself but due to it being tricky for myself to accurately envision the emotions or understanding of a vase of flowers. We did manage to tie this idea to flowers feeling slightly imprisoned in a vase but hoping for better days as the rain pelts down onto the grass and the flowers hope to one day be reborn again for their owner to treat them with love and care once again.
David finished the track, naming it Blue Butterflies, and the result was a lot more effective and evocative, which helped demonstrate his skills as a songwriter and also showcased mine as a collaborator in creating a piece of music I believe turned out well but not as well as I had hoped.
