Brief 3 - The Truth

The third and final brief was focused on ‘The Truth’, at its core allowing me to write a song about a topic I had a massive focus on; in this case, I chose to focus on the concept of existence and oblivion (the concept of being entirely forgotten), as it ties into a concept I had for a track on the album I am currently working on entitled Life Is A Video Game. The track was eventually called Who Can You Trust? and focuses on the idea of “reverse dementia”, in that a person is reincarnated (or has been respawned in a game) but everyone that they knew has no recollection of them, similar to alienation or social disillusionment.
As I had complete free-reign to do what I wished with this track instead of adhering to a specific method or trying to envisage myself as a specific object, I was more experimental in my approach to this track, choosing to sample a talk regarding dementia and Alzheimer’s in order to create a slightly mocking, unsettling tone to start the track before it carried into a drunken, almost swing-style beat.
As I am looking to have Who Can You Trust? be an official track on Life Is A Video Game, I ultimately didn’t finish it as I believe there are some elements that need further refining or adding in order to make the track fully complete and worthy of being on the album. An example of this is that the choruses are much more hard-hitting and heavier in their tone compared to the chorus in order to give a slightly disjointed, sludgy feel present in bands such as Mastodon or Alice In Chains. The song structure is also something I am adjusting as I want it to be slightly unorthodox, ending on the bridge/outro rather than having a bridge leading to a final chorus.
Overall, with this method, I feel I had the most creative freedom, allowing me to create or develop a piece that I have full creative liberty and control over.
